Since it is a hormone, scientists and medical professionals have known for a long time that testosterone has a large impact on mood. Although more research is needed, recent studies have shown a very positive link between testosterone treatments can help reduce levels of depression, particularly in men.
What Exactly is Testosterone and What Causes Low Levels?
Testosterone is technically classified as a male hormone, although women produce it as well. Men just normally produce much more of it. It is a contributor to many key body functions, including bone density, muscle mass, strength, body fat distribution, sperm production, and sex drive. When improper levels of this hormone are produced, a long list of both physical and mental side effects can occur, including depression.
The medical term for low testosterone is hypogonadism. For men, this can be classified as primary or secondary. Primary hypogonadism is when the problem is with the testicles, which make testosterone. Secondary hypogonadism is when the pituitary gland is not receiving the signals sent by the body to produce more testosterone. Many things can contribute to either primary or secondary hypogonadism, including high levels of iron in the blood, HIV/AIDS, cancer treatments, obesity, or even normal aging.
New Study from German University TU Dresden
A major new study comprised of 27 randomized control trials was carried out at TU Dresden. Some of these trials dated back all of the way to 2000. These trials were made up of nearly 2,000 men and showed a significant correlation between testosterone treatments and a reduction in the symptoms associated with depression. Some of these men were clinically diagnosed with the condition, while others simply self-reported the symptoms.
The results of these trials were exciting. The treatments had roughly the same success rate as many of the currently available anti-depressants on the market. Participants saw significant improvement within 6 weeks of starting the treatment. It proved to be just as effective for young and old men.
More research will need to be done moving forward. The current research does not show the level of depression that can be treated and if it is only effective for men with a hormone deficiency. Still, researchers find the results of these trials to be very promising.
